About Doosan Machine Tools
The Doosan name has been associated with industrial manufacturing for more than a century. The Doosan Group was founded in 1896 in Seoul, South Korea, originally as a trading company. Over time the company expanded into heavy industry, power systems, construction equipment, and machine tools.
Doosan entered the global CNC machine tool market in a major way in 2005 when it acquired Daewoo Machine Tools, one of the most respected machine tool builders in Korea. Daewoo machines had already built a strong reputation throughout the 1980s and 1990s for durable CNC machining centers and turning centers.
After the acquisition, Doosan continued developing the product lines under the Doosan Machine Tools name. The machines quickly gained popularity in North American manufacturing shops because they offered a combination of strong build quality, modern controls, and competitive pricing.
Today many machines originally sold under the Doosan brand are now produced under the DN Solutions name, but thousands of Doosan machines remain in operation across the United States. Because of their reliability and large installed base, used Doosan machines remain in high demand in the secondary machine tool market.
Doosan Vertical Machining Centers
Doosan vertical machining centers are among the most common CNC milling machines found in job shops and production environments. These machines are typically used for machining aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and other materials in industries ranging from aerospace to general manufacturing.
One of the most recognizable Doosan vertical machining center families is the DNM Series. These machines have been produced since the early 2010s and remain widely used today.
Popular models include:
- DNM 4000 (introduced around 2011)
- DNM 4500 (2013–present)
- DNM 5700 (2013–present)
- DNM 6500 (2016–present)
In the DNM naming convention, the number typically refers to the machine’s travel capacity and machine frame size. For example, a DNM 5700 indicates a larger machining envelope than a DNM 4500.
Before the DNM line, Doosan produced vertical machining centers in the VM Series and VC Series, many of which were produced from the late 1990s through the 2000s. These machines are still commonly traded in the used market.
Doosan Horizontal Machining Centers
Doosan horizontal machining centers are widely used for production machining where pallet changers and automation systems allow shops to keep spindles running continuously.
One of the most common horizontal machine families is the HM Series, which has been produced since the early 2000s. Machines such as the HM 5000 and HM 6300 are frequently used in automotive and heavy equipment manufacturing environments.
More recent horizontal machining centers include machines from the NHM Series, which began production in the mid-2010s.
Typical models include:
- HM 5000 (early 2000s – 2015)
- HM 6300 (2000s – 2015)
- NHM 5000 (2015 – present)
- NHM 6300 (2015 – present)
The model numbers generally refer to pallet size or machine capacity, making it easier for shops to identify which machine fits their work envelope requirements.
Doosan CNC Lathes
Doosan CNC lathes are among the most widely installed turning centers in North America. These machines are used for turning shafts, precision components, and cylindrical parts in a wide range of industries.
Two of the most recognized Doosan lathe families are the Lynx Series and the Puma Series.
Lynx Series
The Lynx Series machines are compact, high-speed turning centers designed primarily for smaller parts and high-volume production.
Common models include:
- Lynx 2100 (2000s – present)
- Lynx 220 (2010s – present)
- Lynx 2600 (2010s – present)
The numbering generally corresponds to chuck size and machine capacity.
Puma Series
The Puma Series is one of the most widely recognized Doosan lathe platforms. These machines are designed for heavier turning applications and are frequently used for medium-to-large parts.
Popular models include:
- Puma 240 (late 1990s – 2000s)
- Puma 2600 (2010s – present)
- Puma 3100 (2010s – present)
- Puma 400 Series (2000s – present)
Many Puma machines are available with live tooling, Y-axis machining, and sub-spindles, allowing shops to perform multiple operations in a single setup.
Doosan B-Axis CNC Lathes
Doosan also produces advanced turning centers with B-axis milling capability, allowing the machine to perform both turning and complex milling operations.
These machines are typically part of the SMX Series, which combines turning and multi-axis milling capabilities.
Common models include:
- SMX 2100 (introduced around 2010)
- SMX 2600 (2010s – present)
The SMX naming convention reflects Simultaneous Mill-Turn capability, where the machine can perform milling and turning operations within a single platform.
Doosan Multi-Spindle CNC Lathes
Multi-spindle CNC lathes are designed for extremely high-volume production environments where multiple parts can be machined simultaneously.
Doosan’s multi-spindle machines are commonly used in industries such as automotive manufacturing and fastener production.
Machines in this category began appearing in the Doosan lineup during the 2010s, designed to compete with traditional European multi-spindle platforms.
Doosan Vertical Turret Lathes
Doosan vertical turret lathes (VTLs) are designed for machining large, heavy parts such as gears, bearings, and large cylindrical components.
These machines are commonly found in energy, heavy equipment, and industrial manufacturing environments.
Common machines include models from the Puma VTS Series, which began production in the late 2000s.
Doosan Mill-Turn Machines
Mill-turn machines combine turning and milling operations in a single machine, allowing shops to complete complex parts without moving them between machines.
Doosan mill-turn machines are typically part of the SMX Series and Puma MX Series, both of which have been produced since the late 2000s and early 2010s.
These machines are particularly valuable in aerospace and medical manufacturing where complex geometries and tight tolerances are required.
Doosan Horizontal Boring Mills
Doosan horizontal boring mills are designed for machining very large components such as industrial housings, structural parts, and heavy equipment components.
Machines in the HBM Series have been produced since the early 2000s and remain common in large manufacturing facilities.
Typical models include:
- HBM 110 (2000s – present)
- HBM 130 (2000s – present)
These machines are often equipped with large tables and powerful spindles designed for heavy material removal.
Doosan 5 Axis Machining Centers
Doosan also produces 5-axis machining centers designed for complex multi-surface machining operations.
These machines allow manufacturers to machine complex components in a single setup, improving accuracy and reducing production time.
Machines in this category began appearing more prominently in the Doosan lineup during the 2010s, as demand for multi-axis machining increased in aerospace and precision manufacturing.
